The unique anatomy of the shoulder enables a wide range of motion in the joint, however this comes an increased risk of dysfunction and injury. The Neck & Shoulder Active Rehab online workshop will take you through the correct exercise techniques to avoid injury and assist in rehabilitation.

Gain a better understanding of the interaction between the thoracic spine, shoulder girdle and cervical spine and the importance of ensuring all areas are functioning correctly to avoid injury. Each of these areas will be looked at individually, focusing on the anatomy, assessment and targeted exercise progressions to address common dysfunctions.

We will discuss topics such as:

  • the role of the thoracic spine in gleno-humeral joint stability
  • which shoulder position loads the rotator cuff the most
  • why core training is important for shoulder rehabilitation
  • tips to reduce tension in accessory breathing muscles of the neck and shoulder
  • how to assess muscle length and flexibility
  • exercise progressions for dysfunctions such as poke neck posture, upper crossed syndrome and flattened cervical spine
  • exercises to strengthen deep neck flexor muscles to reduce sternocleidomastoid spasm

    • Understand the thoracic spine shapes and its relation to posture and functioning shoulder girdle
    • Practically demonstrate a variety of thoracic mobility exercises to help improve breathing and posture and general upper body fitness
    • Understand the muscles of the shoulder girdle
    • Understand the stages of normal scapula-humeral rhythm and why it is important for reducing chronic tendon loading in the shoulder
    • Understand the anatomy of the rotator cuff muscles and their roles in shoulder stabilisation
    • Demonstrate how to teach a safe rotator cuff strengthening program
    • Understand importance of activating and maintaining deep neck flexors
    • Learn ways to incorporate strengthening and stabilisation to the cervical spine in a safe way

 

What You Will Need

    • A computer, tablet or phone with access to the internet 
    • A pilates ball and resistance band
    • An exercise mat or appropriate space to do floor exercises

 

The Finer Details

    • Online Workshop Structure:  This online workshop can be started at any time, and completed at your own pace. The workshop consists of pre-recorded presentation and demonstration videos that can be watched at any time. There is also a manual that can be downloaded and referred to as you are watching the videos.
    • The Assessment Section: To receive your Certificate of Completion you must successfully complete the online quiz. This quiz consists of multiple choice and short answer questions and you have 3 attempts to complete the quiz successfully (pass mark 80%). If you are unable to pass the quiz in 3 attempts, we will work with you to clarify any areas you are unsure of and give you another 3 attempts. (Please note: video submissions are no longer required for this assessment)

      Once all assessments have been completed you will be able to download your Certificate of Completion.

    • Length of Workshop:  This workshop should take you approximately 5-6 hours to complete. This includes watching the videos, reading the manual, practicing the exercises, and completing the assessments.
